Cupping

Image

This PT technique, also called myofascial decompression, is designed to heal and rejuvenate tissues, promoting improved muscle function and performance.  A physical therapist places a cup, or series of cups, on or around a body part that needs attention due to an injury or pain. The physical therapist then uses a pump or manual application to create the suction within the cup to create a decompression of the superficial tissue from the underlying tissue.  Myofascial cupping therapy can be used for contractures, scar adhesions, post surgical recovery, muscle and movement imbalances, tendinopathy, postural issues, pain, trigger points, nerve compression, and edema.  As superficial tissues are lifted, deep fascia tissues receive more blood, reducing stiffness and promoting healing.

Decompression helps release tight tissues, improve trigger points, improve blood flow and nutrient exchange and create a change to the neuromuscular system which allows for pain relief.   The negative pressure of decompression helps create space and improves circulation surrounding muscles, nerves, vascular tissue and fascia creating more mobility and improved function of these tissues.
