E-stim

Image

There are many varieties of electric stimulation used in physical therapy. It can be used to treat disuse atrophy, pain, decreased motion, muscle imbalances, inflammation, muscle guarding, and to restore muscle function after surgery.

Small electrodes are placed over the indicated areas of pain, tissue restrictions, or reduced muscle function and this is sometimes combined with the application of ice or heat to help reduce inflammation or promote increased circulation in the tissues. Treatment generally lasts 15-20 minutes depending on the indicated goal of the procedure. If used after manual therapy techniques it can help reduce soreness associated with your treatment to allow a quicker return to exercise and activity as you progress in your rehab.
